July and August 2016 Newsletter

It’s a story that most of us learned when we were just young children. And because that story was found in the Bible and because we had the faith of a little child, we never doubted it. We believed it and accepted it as one of the most important events the world has ever seen or known.  And exactly what story am I talking about it?  None other than the biblical account of Noah and the great Flood.  And this month on July 7 something big (and I mean REALLY BIG!) is going to be happening outside the town of Williamstown, Kentucky.  For there, situated halfway between Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky, the Christian ministry known as Answers in Genesis will be opening its brand new Ark Encounter which will feature – are you ready for this? – a full-size Noah’s Ark, built according to the dimensions given in the Bible.  This massive structure will be 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high.  The Ark Encounter web site says: “…this modern engineering marvel will amaze visitors young and old…From the moment you turn the corner and the towering Ark comes into view, to the friendly animals in the zoo, to the jaw-dropping exhibits inside the Ark, you’ll experience the pages of the Bible like never before.”

Now perhaps you’re wondering why anyone would undertake such a project that in today’s dollars has an estimated cost of over $30 million.  Well, I’ll get to that shortly, but for right now let me share with you some more facts and information about this architectural wonder that I pulled off the web site.

  • It is the largest timber frame structure in the world, full of world-class exhibits designed to answer your questions about the biblical account of Noah’s
  • It is a one-of-a-kind historically themed attraction. In an entertaining, educational, and immersive way, it presents a number of historical events centered around the original Ark that God instructed Noah to build.
  • As you enter Noah’s world aboard the massive Ark, you’ll tour three decks filled with scores of world-class exhibit bays. These stunning exhibits will allow you to experience what Noah’s life may have been like.
  • Many questions that you and others may have had about the Ark will be answered, like:
  • How big was the Ark? The Bible uses the word “cubit” as a measurement.  What was a cubit?
  • How did Noah fit all the animals on board?
  • How did Noah feed and care for all the animals?
  • How did Noah actually build the Ark?
  • How seaworthy was this gigantic vessel?
  • What happened to Noah, the animals, and the Earth after the Flood?
  • How did the Flood affect the topography of the earth?
  • Was Noah’s Ark found or ever sighted on Ararat?

The ministry known as Answers in Genesis and its founder and CEO, Ken Ham, are absolutely passionate about defending the Bible and the Christian faith.  Some of you have already visited the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, which was designed to uphold and defend the biblical account of Creation.  It is Ken Ham’s contention (and it’s been mine as well over my many years in the ministry) that if you can’t believe the Genesis account of Creation, then how can you believe any other part of Scripture, especially the salvation story that finds its climax in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  In other words, if God was going to deceive us from the very beginning of the Bible and give us just a story (a fairy tale or myth) rather than the truth about how the world came into existence, then He is definitely not worthy of our trust when it comes to the rest of His Word.

And isn’t that what our archenemy Satan really wants?  He’s the master of casting doubt on God’s Word.  He did it with Eve in the Garden of Eden when he approached her and said, “Did God really say…?”  He did it with Jesus when he was in the wilderness for 40 days and tried to convince Him that His heavenly Father was holding back from Him.  And he continues to do it today.  Just look at what the devil has done with the story of Noah and the Flood.  Many a baby nursery has been decorated with a “Noah’s Ark” theme.  And what do you see in those rooms?  You see happy smiling animals riding in a colorfully painted boat and looking as though they are having a grand old time.

But what does the Bible say about that period of our planet’s history?  Genesis 6:5-7 tells us: The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”  In other words, the whole account of Noah, the Ark, and the Flood was spawned by the wickedness and rebellion of human beings against the loving God who had brought them and the entire world into existence.

And that’s where the Ark Encounter begins…but that’s not where it ends.  For it ultimately points people to God’s solution to man’s sin problem.  And that solution is Jesus.  Just as there was only one door whereby one could enter the Ark, so also there is only one door whereby one can enter heaven.  In fact, Jesus even said of Himself in John 10:9: “I am the door; whoever enters through me will be saved.”  If you’ve been following the development of the Ark Encounter which began in the mind of Ken Ham a number of years ago, then you have heard him say over and over again that it will be one of the world’s greatest evangelistic outreaches of our time for its ultimate goal and purpose is not just to tell the story of Noah and the Flood but to ultimately point people to Jesus in order that they might discover Him to be the true Ark – the one and only vessel whereby we can be delivered from the judgment of God that we rightfully deserve because of our sins.

So if you haven’t made any plans yet for your summer vacation or if you’re looking for some unique place or attraction to visit, you might want to drive the 306 miles to Williamstown, Kentucky and check out the Ark Encounter.  Aside from the Ark itself, you can also do some zip lining there and visit exotic animals from other continents in the Ararat Ridge Zoo and even hop a ride on a camel or donkey.  Not only will it be an eye-opening, jaw-dropping experience as some have described it, but hopefully it will also be a great way to experience another type of encounter, an encounter with the One whose love for you led Him to undergo a far greater judgment than even the Flood of Noah’s day – the judgment of God that He endured on the cross when He bore our sins and suffered our punishment.

A blessed and relaxing summer to you,

Pastor Meyer
