Putting a Smile on the Face of God, Part 1

Genesis 6:5-8 5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord…

Bringing Pleasure to the Heart of God

Revelation 4:11 (NLT) 11 “You are worthy, O Lord our God,     to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things,     and they exist because you created what you pleased.” Dear Friends in Christ, We’ve all had them at some time or another – those experiences or events that stand out in our minds and…

A Temporary Assignment

Psalm 39:4 4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end     and the number of my days;     let me know how fleeting my life is. Dear Friends in Christ, Early on in my ministry I remember visiting with an elderly pastor whose name was Ervin Meseke.  He was raised in the Augsburg area, just 4 miles east of…

Life is a Trust

Luke 12:48 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Dear Friends in Christ, Last Sunday in the introduction…

Passing the Test

1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Dear Friends in Christ, In my introduction this morning I’d…

What Drives You?

Ecclesiastes 4:4 4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.   Dear Friends in Christ, If you happened to be here last Sunday morning, then hopefully you will remember that I began a brand new sermon series that…

Reflecting the Son

2 Corinthians 3:18 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a] the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.   Dear Friends in Christ, Recently I came across some interesting information about the moon.  I knew I wanted to talk about…

The Gamble of Motherhood

I wonder how many risk takers we have in church this morning, how many people that are not afraid to take a gamble or two in life. If that describes you, maybe you can relate to a fellow in France who thought he’d made a real shrewd business deal 49 years ago. He agreed to pay a 90-year-old woman $500 a month until she died as a way of purchasing her apartment. Apparently this is a common practice in France. The elderly owner enjoys a monthly income from the buyer, but once the owner dies the apartment immediately becomes the buyer’s, which could prove to be a real bargain for the buyer – provided – and this is a big provision – provided the owner dies sooner rather than later.

Widely Universal Yet Intensely Personal

John 21:1-17 Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish 1  Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.[a] It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter…

When It’s Hard to Believe

John 20:19-31 Jesus Appears to His Disciples 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.…
